Certification Scheme (ISCC EU – ISCC PLUS)

ISCC EU

ISCC EU has been fully recognised by the European Commission since 2011. With ISCC EU certification the compliance with the legal requirements for the sustainability and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions savings criteria for sustainable fuels and the production of electricity, heating and cooling from biomass set out in the renewed Renewable Energy Directive (REDII) for all Member States of the European Union can be verified. ISCC EU certification covers the raw materials and fuels as stated in the RED II:
• Agricultural and forest biomass, waste and residues (including agricultural, aquaculture, fisheries and forestry residues), lignocellulosic and non-food cellulosic materials for the production of biofuels, bioliquids and biomass fuels, including advanced biofuels and biogas for transport (i.e. biofuels and biogas produced from feedstocks listed in Part A of Annex IX of the RED II) and biofuels, bioliquids and biomass fuels with a low risk or a high risk of indirect land-use change (iLUC).
• Liquid and solid waste streams of non-renewable origin or waste processing and exhaust gas of non-renewable origin for the production of recycled carbon fuels.
• Energy derived from renewable sources other than biomass for the production of renewable liquid and gaseous transport fuels of nonbiological origin.
ISCC certification goes beyond the legal requirements of the RED II as it covers additional ecological and social requirements.

Market / Scope of Application
Sustainable fuels used for transport, electricity, heating and cooling and the production of electricity, heating and cooling from biomass in the European Union. Covering biofuels, bioliquids, biomass fuels, advanced fuels, low ilUC risk fuels, and recycled carbon fuels.

Materials Covered
All types of agricultural and forest biomass, biogenic waste and residues, non-biological renewables and recycled carbon-based materials.

ISCC PLUS

ISCC PLUS certification is a voluntary scheme that is applicable for the bioeconomy and circular economy for food, feed, chemicals, plastics, packaging, textiles and renewable feedstock derived from a process using renewable energy sources. ISCC PLUS covers the same certification requirements as ISCC EU but can be customised to meet the needs of different markets or specific applications. All kinds of biomass, waste and residues, non-biological renewables and recycled carbon materials can be certified under ISCC PLUS.
In addition to the core requirements of ISCC PLUS, ISCC provides the option to adapt ISCC PLUS certificates to specific market requirements through voluntary add-ons. Depending on the respective add-on, they can be applied for the agricultural production area and for the entire supply chain on a voluntary basis. The modular approach ensures the fulfillment of different market requirements and continuous improvement. All voluntary add-ons can be found on the ISCC website.

Market / Scope of Application
Circular and bio-based products, renewables, food, feed & biofuels outside the framework of the REDII.

Materials Covered
Under ISCC PLUS, all types of agricultural and forestry raw materials, bio wastes and residues, renewable feedstocks and fossil materials contributing to the circular economy and bioeconomy can be certified.
